Working on a team energizes me in a positive way, although Im also confident in my ability to work alone when I need to.I am very comfortable working on a team, but I can also work independently, as well. I am comfortable working alone and in a group depending on the situation. If the task is easy enough to tackle on my own without requiring collective brainstorming, I am happy to work on my own. However, if the assignment is a high priority one or is too much for one person to handle, I welcome working with a team to tackle the project together. In my experience, most proje cts require a combination of independent work and brainstorming depending on their various elements.As a graphic designer, I work best in a quiet, isolated environment when Im actually at the drawing board. However, prior to actually beginning work on a project, I find I get my best creative ideas when brainstorming and collaboratively bouncing ideas off of other members on the design team. Working in sales has strengthened my abilities to work both alone and with others. I am comfortable engaging with a customer face to face, but I also believe in the benefit of sitting and brainstorming with coworkers about best practices, sales goals, lessons learned, and alternative approaches. Additionally, having a team behind me gives me confidence that if I come across something I am unsure of while working alone, I have the resources to consult someone who can educate or help me.

Don’t Just Dive In The job boards can make you think they’re just a sea of opportunities. However, instead of diving into this unruly ocean â€" in which you most assuredly will get lost fast â€" wade into the water slowly, with a plan. The plan centers on identifying companies you want to work for â€" not necessarily just individual listings. I know that “research” can seem like a time-consuming concept, but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, we can even dial back the term “research” and instead just call it “preferences.” What do you prefer? This is not objective; it’s subjective. Therefore, initially, go with your gut instinct. Brainstorm. What companies are within a commutable distance from your home? What industries are growing fast where you live? What types of companies have you worked for in the past that you liked? Then, take that list and get social… Make Sense of Your Social Media The primary online portal to use for job search is LinkedIn, but only if you make your LinkedIn usage something that makes sense. When you log on every day, who and what is in your news feed? If it’s random, it’s wrong, so let’s change it. Think of LinkedIn the same way you think of Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. You don’t log on and see everyone on the globe. You see the people you chose. Apply that same concept to LinkedIn. On this social media platform, the people you choose to see need to be recruiters, human resources specialists, and functional decision makers at the companies you put on your list. Invite those people to connect. Customize your invitation to express a logical reason why you’re reaching out to that person specifically. If, after a few days, the person has not accepted your invitation, go back to their profile and click on “follow.” If you’re either connected or following, the person’s in your news feed. Split Your Resume Into 2 Two resumes are ideal, but not for the reasons that you may have always thought. Instead of having a resume for one objective, then a second resume for a second objective, concentrate on your primary goal and split your resume into two. One resume is your traditional presentation. The other is a 1-page resume with some unique information at the end. The way you get it onto 1 page is to delete much of the text regarding your duties and accomplishments â€" no one’s reading all of that on this version. Give people your expertise, chronology, education, and certifications. At the end, present your list of companies you’re interested in. How to Organize Your Job Search How to Organize Your Job Search When on the hunt for a job , it’s not uncommon to be applying for multiple opportunities at once. This is especially true for those of us just starting out in our careers . But multiple applications mean different resume versions , various cover letters and many, many different deadlines to keep track of. With so many moving parts at once, it’s easy to become disorganized. But a disorderly job search process can lead to embarrassing mistakes such as lost phone numbers, confused deadlines, and missed interviews . To help you avoid these downfalls, we’ve put together a few tips to help you keep your job search organized. It’s easy to want to just jump right in and begin filling out job applications . But before you do, it’s best to take a step back and take a look at the bigger picture. Your career journey should start with a look at the direction in which you’re headed. Though it may seem trivial to set aside time to organize your thoughts to clearly think through the career path you’d like to pursue, this is one of the most important steps to take. How are you supposed to start going anywhere if you don’t know where you  want to go? Reflect on what you’d like to do and why you feel that’s the right path for you. You might  feel a little lost and be unsure about where you’re going, but at this stage in your life, that’s ok. Start by thinking about your long-term goals as those don’t need to be overly specific. Where do you want to be 10 years from now? Then work backward from there down to five years, one year, and six months from now. Be sure to think through your personal goals in addition to your career and finances. Take your family, education, and anything else you value into consideration. After you’ve spent some time finding your direction and clearly thinking through your goals, it’s time to start building out a schedule . After all, in order to achieve the goals you now have in mind, you’ll need to set aside time to go after them. The first step in this stage is to identify time you can set aside that’s dedicated to job searching. Find blocks of time within your schedule between classes, work, and any other responsibilities. Job searching is a time-consuming process and requires regular attention. So aim to set aside at least two hours every day to fully focus on it.   Next, start building a schedule to complete certain tasks you know you need to get done. For instance, devote one hour to cleaning up your professional online profiles like LinkedIn. Devote another hour or two to preparing your resume . You should be able to fill up at least the first few days of your schedule, if not your first week, with tasks to complete. Perhaps even more important than actually setting up this schedule is sticking to it. Let’s be honest here  - activities like resume building and email sending are less than thrilling tasks. It can be easy to let these fall by the wayside and choose something a little more exciting to occupy your time. However, this will only put you behind and lead you down a path of disorganized job searching. Make sure you leave the time you set aside for job hunting devoid of any other activities. Looking for a job is more often than not a high-pressure situation , so you might be tempted  to begin aimlessly applying for any open position you find. But even though applying for more jobs can make it feel like you’re increasing your chances, this is actually just a waste of your time - not to mention an easy way to become disorganized. Remember that time you dedicated at the beginning of this process to think through your short-term and long-term goals? Here’s where that comes in handy. Start off by narrowing your search to only the jobs that align with those goals. Look out for the opportunities that will help you get to where you want to be. Next, narrow your search down to only the openings that match the level of skill you have. Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that your qualifications need to match up with those listed on the job description exactly. In fact, this will likely never be the case. Job descriptions should be more of a directional tool for whether or not you’re a potential fit for a role, so look for those where you match around 80  percent of the qualifications listed. Here’s where things can get especially messy. Applying for multiple positions at once leaves you with a lot of different things to manage. 5 Tech Tools to Help With Work-Life Balance - The Muse 5 Tech Tools to Help With Work-Life Balance Recently, I found myself sitting on a sunny terrace with some old pals discussing, of all things, whether or not tech helps us or hinders us in keeping our work and our personal lives separate. I know, we should’ve been talking about the wine or our significant others, or something less work-related. But hey, what can I say? We’re all addicted to our phones (conveniently placed on the table where we sat). The verdict? We decided that, when used well, smartphones and apps actually help you to stay on top of your work without giving up your life. Not sold on that? My friends and I compiled our best tips to making that statement true. 1. Adjust Your Settings So Only Important People Can Reach You Just because you can’t be completely out of reach doesn’t mean you have to read- let alone react to - every email. Almost every phone now lets you customize email notifications so that your boss can reach you if there’s a real emergency, but the office manager won’t bother you about the company picnic. On iOS, you can set up a VIP list so that only messages from the top people in your life set off an alert. Even more exciting is that if you update your iOS, you can also get special alerts for certain email threads. Meanwhile, Gmail on Android lets you choose to only receive notifications for emails with specific categories or tags. 2. Get (Even) More Control of Notifications If the settings above aren’t enough, you can get fancy with IFTTT automation or an app like Lightflow for Android. They give you even more granular alerts, including customized lights, ringtones, and vibrations. (Oh my!) Or, switch up your email app itself. Inbox by Gmail takes a novel approach by organizing your emails into groups- each one with its own customizable notifications. So, you can decide to receive all the emails from your office or your bank, but not the ones from your local coffee shop. 3. Play Hide and Seek I’m a firm believer in “out of sight, out of mind.” So, if you don’t want to be bothered by thoughts of your job when you’re off duty, try keeping the apps you use for work somewhere separate. On most phones, you can put apps in their own folder by just dragging one icon on top of another. Then you can move those folders to another home screen altogether. With an Android custom home screen like Nova Launcher, you can really hide apps by moving a folder to the dock, and then hiding the dock with a swipe. Work life gone from your phone with one touch (or swipe). 4. Let Your Phone Remember Everything for You You’ve limited the distractions coming from your phone- but what about the ones that wake you up at 2 AM? You know, questions about your upcoming presentation (“Was it for Monday or Tuesday?”) or concerns about an upcoming vacation (“Did you book the hike?”). Worries like this can easily be handled in advance if you just remember to keep your calendar and to-do app up-to-date. In addition, you can set reminders for the most important events and tasks. Knowing in the back of your mind that your phone will do the remembering for you really does make it easier to sleep at night. 5. Capture the Thought When you have a beautiful brainstorm moment while walking your dog or cruising down the highway, your always-with-you phone is the perfect tool. Use it as a catch-all so you can come back to those ideas when you’re at your desk later. An simple and effective note-taking app for iOS is Vesper. Alternatively, the Drafts 4 app lets you quickly enter text and then decide where to save it. For Android, Google Keep handles all kinds of input, including speech, photos, and lists, while Evernote offers a range of organizing options like notebooks, tags, and shortcuts. Today’s tech means that work can be with you wherever you are. But, with the right tweaks and tools, you can keep it under control so that you can be both shine at your job and enjoy a day in the sunshine.

The HoloLens Revolution The HoloLens Revolution The HoloLens Revolution As recently as 2014, when scientists at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena plotted the course of one of their Mars rovers, they consulted maps and satellite images, as well as images uploaded from the rover itself. There was an element of guesswork in integrating all those overlapping data sources, but guessing wrong could send the rover along an impassable path or get it intractably stuck. Now, JPL scientists have a new tool for studying possible routes. That tool, called OnSight, enables users to explore 3-D stereo views of the Martian environment and to get a natural sense of depth and understanding of spatial relationships. They are able to examine the rovers worksite from a first-person perspective, plan new activities, and preview the results of their work firsthand. A pilot group of mission scientists has been testing the application, using it for such tasks as identifying rock formations that merit further study by the Curiosity rover. That NASA tool is just one of the applications of a new type of computer hardware and software combination called mixed reality or MR. Its a variant of virtual reality systems, which have been around for decades and have edged toward the mainstream through new headsets, smart mobile devices with 3-D capabilities, and improvement in display resolution. Mixed reality uses some of the same technology, but instead of an immersive experience cut off from the outside world, it blends or merges holograms into the physical environment. Mixed reality in combination with technologies that enable interaction with holograms, called holographic computing, is poised to be the next big disruptive technology. Major technology companies such as Microsoft, Google, Samsung, Apple, Sony, and Facebook are investing significant funding in the development of low-cost virtual and mixed reality systems, and Microsofts HoloLens is already being used in some applications, such as NASAs OnSight system mentioned above. These devices promise to break down the barriers between virtual and physical reality, and enable the physical and virtual worlds to intersect in new ways. And they have some very real engineering applications that could well transform the profession as profoundly as the personal computer did a generation ago. ;custompagebreak; The Holographic Computer Holograms may seem futuristic, but most of us carry around objects- such as credit cards or drivers licenses- embedded with them. The recording of the light field necessary to make a hologram requires a laser, a beam splitter, and a photographic medium that enables the light scattered from an object to be recorded and later reconstructed. The resulting image changes as the position and orientation of the viewing system changes in the same way as if the object were still present, thus making the image appear three-dimensional. Up to now, the most common photographic recording medium has been film. Holograms, by comparison, have been 3-D snapshots rather than moving, interactive images. Technologists have been working for decades to find a way to project dynamic, holographic images into the spaces where we live and work. The goal has been to create something that works similar to the depictions of holography in science fiction, from the recorded plea of Princess Leia in Star Wars to the immersive holodeck of Star Trek. The Microsoft HoloLens doesnt do that. Instead, it is a self-contained system running a special version of Windows 10 that generates and projects stereographic images onto the lenses of a headset. In addition to the central processing unit and graphics processing unit of a conventional computer, the HoloLens possesses a separate holographic processing unit. That HPU calculates where 3-D graphics exist in the physical space of the user and keeps track of such input as voice commands and gestures. All that computing power- along with built-in speakers, advanced sensors, buttons, a camera, and vent- have been miniaturized to fit in an untethered visor. Compared to virtual reality headsets such as the Oculus Rift, the HoloLens projects its images onto a fairly narrow field- about the area of a sheet of copy paper held 18 inches in front of your face. That limited field of view is acceptable because unlike virtual reality, mixed reality does not try to be fully immersive. Instead, the HoloLens projects its images onto the lenses in a way so that the holograms are perceived to exist together with physical real-world elements in a shared environment. Thats immensely difficult. If a hologram is supposed to sit on a table, the holographic computing system must calculate how that virtual object should appear to the HoloLens user as he turns his head, stands up or sits down, or if he leaves and then reenters the room. Indeed, if a real-world object passes through the space between the user and the hologram, the holographic computing system can in real time calculate which parts of the hologram would be eclipsed by that object and make those portions disappear. Whats more, these holographic objects are interactive. Virtual buttons can be clicked and holographic objects can be transformed with tools or by touch, much the way that objects on a conventional computer screen can be altered. By virtually transforming the physical world into a tangible representation of programs and controls, HoloLens represents a dramatic reduction in the distance between the user and the interface. ;custompagebreak; Engineering Applications Microsoft introduced the system in January 2015 and since March 2016 has been shipping the system to developers and academic groups. Engineers, designers, architects, and animation teams at these organizations are using the HoloLens technology to discover the best practices and most powerful application for this new computing platform. NASA, for instance, has been working with Microsoft on developing software tools to exploit the HoloLens. Another NASA application called ProtoSpace uses holograms for spacecraft design. The system superimposes a computer-generated version of space hardware over the field of view of the users headset. That enables NASA scientists to naturally walk around a full-scale version of a spacecraft (such as the Mars 2020 rover currently under development at the NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory), and examine different components. That capability provides a feeling of how large each component is or how tight the tolerance might be- two measures that might be difficult to assess from looking at a model on a computer screen. The goal is to avoid design conflicts as the new six-wheeled robot is assembled. This isnt theoretical: NASA engineers are using ProtoSpace today. Engineers recently used ProtoSpace to check the size of the rovers nuclear batteries, which is one of the last tasks done before launch, and to make sure they would fit inside the rocket that would launch the spacecraft to Mars.   ProtoSpace allows engineers to test fit all the components and practice the installation procedure at full scale with the actual tools they will need to ensure there is enough clearance. And they can do all this early in the design phase before a single part has been manufactured. Another application being developed is called Sidekick. That tool is intended to provide crews aboard the International Space Station with assistance for complicated tasks. In one mode, Sidekick uses Skype voice and video chat to enable ground operators to see what crew members see, provide real-time guidance, and draw real-time annotations into the crew members environment to coach them through the task. Sidekick can also augment standalone procedures with animated holographic illustrations displayed on top of the objects the crewmember is working with. This capability could provide refresher training and guidance for station crews while they are in space, much closer to the time they will be performing a task. In addition, Sidekick's stand-alone mode could be a resource during future deep space missions, where communication delays complicate difficult operations. Private companies are developing applications for the Holo ­Lens as well. The Swedish defense and security company Saab has created a holographic training system for the HoloLens, and automakers Volvo and Volkswagen are working with Microsoft to demonstrate the use of HoloLens in lieu of CAD software for seeing life-size 3-D design schematics. The engineering and construction firm CDM Smith, Boston, Mass., is discovering how to apply the HoloLens technology through the entire product life cycle. During the planning phase of building plant upgrades or extensions, for instance, engineers are uploading CAD files into the HoloLens to visualize how additional pumps or pipes will fit into the existing space.   During the design phase, the entire project team dons HoloLenses to walk through the final project and experience the project via holograms within the physical environment of the existing site. A safety issue in the layout that would not be obvious in the blueprints can be seen in the holographic representation and team members can suggest changes to the design before construction begins. During construction, CDM Smith engineers walk through the project wearing HoloLenses to compare the holographic models to the actual work, to make sure the job is being done as designed. After the project is complete, facility managers can continue to use holographic models to collect and manage operations data, as well as manage the site remotely. Education may also see some important applications for the HoloLens. My lab at Old Dominion is studying how to use the power of holographic computing to provide learners with a multisensory interactive immersive learning environment. One possibility involves providing remote access- linking several remote classrooms to the same lecture hall, or sending students on a virtual tour of places like the International Space Station, or connecting them to experts who can illustrate processes live, in person, and in 3-D. Clackamas Community College in Oregon also is using HoloLens to develop a hands-on trade-based curriculum for automotive students. For example, students use the mixed reality application to disassemble engines, or to identify, using the headset, all the parts of an engine they are working on. ;custompagebreak; Beyond The Technology It was less than 10 years ago that society was introduced to a new computing paradigm: handheld devices that sensed and responded to touch and motion. What was a novel and, to some, baffling interface in 2007 has become so second nature that today small children are given their parents iPhones to play with- and those children have no problem operating them. After seeing the HoloLens in action and talking to professionals who are excited about its possibilities, I believe holographic computing will follow a similar path. As the technology improves, holographic computers will be capable of rendering high-resolution 3-D digital content that blends seamlessly with our environment.   Manipulating that content will become as easy and natural as picking up a box or sitting at a table. High-definition holograms will look as real as physical objects and will become practical tools of daily life. Whats more, holographic computing platforms and headsets will be light and small enough to wear all the time, and will be able to spatially map the users environment wherever he is. An engineer wearing a holographic computer will be able to use his actual hands to manipulate holograms representing parts of a new engineering system and virtually teleport (or holoport, perhaps) himself and his team members into meetings. The now-ubiquitous handheld screens will be replaced by headsets and wearable devices that provide digital and projected interfaces everywhere. Some technological breakthroughs still need to occur before we get to that point. For one, more natural ways of interacting with holograms and the holographic computing platform need to be developed. Private companies are working to crack that problem. For instance, Milpitas, Calif.-based Eyefluence is working on eye tracking technology intended to enable ones gaze to navigate and explore holographic displays. Another company, Gest, Austin, Texas, is building a device that wraps around the palm and fingers to better capture gestures that a person could use to intuitively create, shape, and size holograms. And advanced voice recognition is being developed by Amazon, Google, Apple, Microsoft, and other tech giants. Advances in scanning technology may enable engineers to scan, capture, create, and render 3-D models based on the users first-person visual perspective, eliminating the need for common scanning tools such as spinning tables for depth sensing devices or large scanning booths that require a hundred cameras. Magic Leap, a Dania Beach, Fla., company that is developing its own holographic computing system and headset, is just one of the groups working on that first-person scanning technology. The biggest breakthroughs, I believe, will come with the coupling of holographic computing and two other emerging AI and information technologies: next-generation cognitive cybernetics capable of deep learning and even anticipatory capabilities, and the Internet of Things comprised of widespread connected embedded sensors. Combined, those three technologies could create something like an Internet of Presence and Experiences, where smart wearable devices and appliances tap into advanced cognition systems to deliver information and services to you via holograms- often before you even know you want it. Those advanced technologies could transform mixed reality into an all-pervasive digital reality that is based on extraordinary levels of data, context, and insight. Beyond the technology, however, there are likely some social aspects to the use of mixed reality headsets that need to be worked out. The headsets are more imposing than the Google Glass, and it may turn out that they are going to be tools best suited for use in designated workspaces and classrooms rather than in coffee shops or stores. On the other hand, society has adapted to mobile computing much more quickly than might have been expected. The possibilities for holographic computing are truly exciting, and the endless applications go as far as the human mind can imagine. Holographic computing is one of the major engineering tools for the 21st century, and we are only beginning to understand how it will change the profession. Ahmed K. Unless you’re freelancing or working solo, your job will also include a cast of colleagues (a.k.a., characters) who you’ll be working with day in and day out. Ideally, you’ll bond with your new team. Sure, you might find one or two people grating, but overall, you should have a few people you like to talk to each morning. However, that’s not always the case. My friend recently started a new job and felt like her co-workers just weren’t that into her- personally. No one was hostile, but they weren’t pausing at her desk to chat or asking her to join their book club either. Are you dealing with something similar? Here are a few common reasons you might feel like don’t you fit in at your new job, and the steps you can take to build a friendlier bond with your co-workers. 1. They Make You Feel Old (or Young) This is not another article on how Boomers suck at email and Millennials should act less like the characters on Girls. Because, personally, I’ve never dealt with these overblown stereotypes. What I have seen is people defaulting to hang out with co-workers who are close in age. The Gen X married folks assume the 20-somethings have no interest in grabbing breakfast before work to discuss strategies for entertaining a bunch of five-year-olds at a birthday party. The new grad assumes the middle-aged parent wouldn’t be able to join the group for a drink- because wouldn’t that take some sort of babysitter coordination not worthy of a last-minute happy hour? So, the new colleague of a different generation (you) is left out of social activities out of an assumed disinterest. While you could keep your work and social lives entirely separate, the rapport built during these sorts of gatherings matters. But start where you are- in the office. Before you set your sights on happy hour or book club, begin small by building more bonds within the confines of the workplace. Next time you have a meeting, take a moment to ask your colleagues how they’re doing and hold a warm conversation (regardless of whether their lives mirror yours a decade ago or 15 years from now). Be your fun, creative, brilliant, welcoming self, and create friendships during the day. It’s likely that one of those office friendships will turn into an invite to happy hour or book club or a birthday party- and at the very least, you’ll feel like you fit in at work. 2. They Make You Feel Poor It’s disconcerting when you feel like you’re the economic outcast of the group. Your co-workers go out to eat practically every day, but you can’t afford that. They want to celebrate a win at a fancy restaurant, order lots or drinks, and split the check, while you don’t really want to drop $75 for your $12 app. So, you keep saying no for financial reasons. But your colleagues interpret it as you not wanting to spend time with them. After a period of time, they eventually stop asking. However, a permanent disinvite is not the best solution here. In fact, your best bet is to be more involved socially, by offering to pitch in with planning and suggesting alternate (i.e., less expensive) options. Ask if everyone would be up for eating outside, somewhere they could buy lunch and you could brown bag it. Or, if it’s around holiday time, suggest an office Secret Santa in lieu of expensive gifts, and so forth. And if a certain clique of colleagues still chooses to bond over mani-pedis and golf games, don’t sweat it. (But do remember how excluded you felt when the designer shoe is on the other foot and you’re making more money than your co-workers.) 3. They Make You Feel Different I’m a reality TV fan, and I once had a co-worker who made comments all the time that made me feel like I didn’t fit in. You know, saying offhand that people who watch these shows aren’t smart enough to read, or that people who spend their leisure time this way or that way are somehow less interesting. Frankly, I don’t know why the very same knowledge or hobbies that can make you appear warm and pop-culture savvy in some groups is counted against you as idiocy in others- but it happens. Of course, it’s totally OK to have different hobbies or interests than your new team, but if you feel judged- or are the one doing the judging- it closes the door for you to connect beyond your “work self” and build a bond.
